 2017-19 Staff Association Executive Board

  • Luis Legaspi, Chair (Officer)

    Luis Legaspi, Chair (Officer)

Home Department: Study Abroad Years with the University: 5

Why I joined the Staff AssociationAs the Chair of the Staff Association, I aspire to represent, support, and advance the relationship between the students, faculty, and administration with the staff. I have served on the SAEB for the past three years, two of them as the Chair of the LGBT Staff and Faculty Association (LGBT SFA). As the LGBT SFA Chair, I collaborated with colleagues to develop programs and opportunities for community-building and networking while representing the LGBT SFA in various committees and meetings. My goal in serving on the board is to support my fellow board members and the staff to have more affirming, supportive, and inclusive work experience to enhance the dynamic environment that is UC San Diego.

What a typical day of work looks like: My average day consists of meeting with several students throughout the day in one-on-one and group-based appointments and workshops. I also have meetings I attend related to my work in international education and as the Chair of the LGBT SFA. Most notably my day is spent interacting with students to discuss their goals in relation to an international experience. I also work on projects which support students indirectly such as working in our database for reporting and enrollment management, creative and web-based projects for marketing and communication, and outreach and remote advising around the campus.

Hobbies, community service, and proudest achievement combined: I am constantly finding ways to connect with folks and stay physically active while giving back to the community. I have found the best opportunity to do this through AIDS LifeCycle, a fundraising bike ride from San Fransico to Los Angeles, and this gives me the opportunity to ride my bike, meet wonderful and committed folks, and raise funds for a cause which is important to me - to see the end of AIDS. This ride has given me confidence in my own emotional and physical strength and reminds me how far we have come and how much more work needs to be done. It's an intense week in which I have the opportunity to be a part of so much beauty and laughter.

  • Bryce Besser, Chair-Elect

    Bryce Besser, Chair-Elect

Additional Staff Association Service: Staff Satisfaction Workgroup, Member

Home Department: Risk Management Years with the University: 4

Why I joined the Staff AssociationI wanted to leverage the experience and knowledge I possessed to help improve the employee experience at UC San Diego and increase my knowledge of UC San Diego’s mission and operations. I’m excited for the opportunity to partner with individuals who are passionate about their work, about the University, and about ensuring that UC San Diego remains a wonderful place to work.

What a typical day of work looks like: I enjoy a very diverse role on campus. On any given day I can be working with departments on how to plan safe research trips overseas, analyzing waivers and special event proposals, corresponding with the Center for Student Involvement regarding Registered Student Organizations, creating training modules on employment law topics for managers and supervisors, reviewing subpoenas for employment and student records, and working with attorneys in the defense of employment and general liability lawsuits. I truly love distilling complex legal and Risk Management principles into easy to understand concepts so that our departments can focus on the world-class teaching and research that makes UC San Diego the preeminent research university in the world.

Favorite movie and whyI love 80’s movies. One of my all-time favorites is Blade Runner. The story, music, and atmosphere were light years ahead of their time and often replicated today.

Additional community service I am involved in and whyI serve on the Governance Committee for the San Diego Youth Symphony. The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS) believes every student deserves music education for the lifetime of joy it provides and the habits, skills and traits students acquire that will improve their academic, personal and professional lives. SDYS adopted a long-term vision of “making music education accessible and affordable for all” and has been instrumental in helping bring music education back into San Diego’s public schools. I serve because, as a former musician, I know firsthand the positive impact music has on child development.  It not only helps children develop a sense of accomplishment, it also teaches them how to push through adversity, work hard to improve in something, and public engagement.

  • Jesse DeWald, Executive Board

    Jesse DeWald, Executive Board

Home Department: Jacobs School of Engineering Years of Service: 4

Why I joined the Staff Association: I believe that a one-way top-down management style is ineffective, and that to run an organization as large as UC San Diego there needs to be strong feedback up the ladder of leadership. Both the good and the bad. I wanted to be a voice for the frustrations I see on campus, but also a promoter of the amazing things we're achieving. I hope to be a part of these conversations through the Staff Association.

What a typical day looks like: I run a large center dedicated to hands-on learning and we serve almost 1500 students a quarter. My  days consist of working one on one with students and troubleshooting with our instructors. In my downtime, I get to be an engineer that builds and creates and fails often.

Hobbies/Passions/Additional Community Service you want people to know about: I am an ex-officio board member for the COLLAB group on campus that is responsible for bringing our making communities together to provide more opportunities for our students, staff, and faculty. The next time you have a really cool idea and want to make something, we may be able to point you in the right direction. At home, I'm a new dad, so I gave up most hobbies for a while. But I am an active Arduino and Raspberry-Pi enthusiast and most of my home is automated.

Susana Perla Barajas, Appointed Executive Board Member

Additional Staff Association Service: Social Events & Networking Committee, Chair. Chicano/Latino Staff Association, Treasurer.

Home Department: Student Life Business Office Years with the University: 8

Why I joined the Staff Association: I am someone who enjoys getting involved in associations. Therefore, it was natural for me to want and reach out to help my colleagues, especially those with professional experiences similar to mine. Joining the Staff Association allows me to connect with my peers.

What a typical day of work looks like: I am a Fund Manager for student organizations. Our team plays a significant role in the development of student organization programs/activities. I meet face-to-face with students providing advice on issues related to student organization finances and procedure concerns.

Proudest achievement: Finishing my first half marathon. I had zero running ability as a kid, and couldn't even run laps. By persevering, I conditioned myself to do the very thing I thought I couldn't do. I met my three goals which were: to not stop, have fun, and to finish. I was extra happy to see my daughter who cheered me on at the finish!

What I'm most passionate about at UC San Diego: Volunteering for Staff Associations, helping the UC community furthering a mission they care about, staging collaborative projects and activities that get staff/faculty/students engaged, and provide opportunities to learn from each other and consider other perspectives.

In 2016 we raised 16.1 million dollars to funds services such as HIV testing, prevention, care and more. The most fulfilling part of the ride was being a part of the “Love Bubble.” The community of cyclists, cooks, medical staff, servers, cleanup crews, roadies and so much more that come together to create a love of life and celebrate the love for those who have been lost.

HobbiesI LOVE playing softball so much that I coach two softball teams. I coach an adult team for America’s Finest Softball League and I coach a team for Special Olympics. One reason I coach is that I love seeing athletes learn new skills and in turn, become more confident in their own ability to play. Also, the game exemplifies the power of team and teamwork. When your team isn’t communicating things don’t seem to go right but when they do magic happens and everyone gets swept up in the moment to pull out wins!
