Julie Torres

Biography

Julie Torres (she/her/hers) serves as the Staff Recognition Chair of the Staff Association. She currently works as Conference & Event Services Coordinator for Hospitality and Conference Services, with 4 years of service with the university. 

She joined the Staff Association because she is passionate about building community and supporting the people who make UC San Diego such a special place to work. Julie enjoys connecting with colleagues across campus, helping staff feel recognized and appreciated, and believes that while UC San Diego may feel like its own city, it is ultimately one big neighborhood where every team and every individual plays an important role.

One of Julie's favorite places on campus is the rooftop meeting rooms on the 15th floor of Seventh College, where there are sweeping ocean views and sunsets that create the perfect backdrop for watching the gliders at Gliderport. Outside of work, she enjoys puzzling, dancing, cooking, baking, and decorating—especially during the holidays. Halloween is her favorite time of year, though you'll usually find candy and treats at her desk no matter the season.

Her advice to new staff is:

“Take the time to learn people, not just processes. UC San Diego can feel big and fast-paced at first but building relationships across teams makes the work easier and more meaningful. Be a sponge, take everything in and don’t be afraid to ask questions, lean on your colleagues, and stay curious, most people are happy to help. And finally, give yourself grace as you learn; confidence comes with time, not overnight.”

1. Supports the ongoing recognition of staff contributions to the UCSD community within the Staff Association and in collaboration with other UCSD units.
2. Works to regularly recognize UCSD Staff Association members in innovative and ongoing ways.
3. Collaborates with HR, VC areas, the Health System, and other UCSD staff-related areas to ensure activities and programs are in place to recognize staff contributions and success.
4. Finds regular ways to highlight staff accomplishments through Staff Association modes of communication.
5. Coordinates UCSD Staff Association end of the year/term recognition event with Immediate Past Chair.
6. Develops opportunities to build up the rapport and encouragement of UCSD Staff Association members.
7. Oversees committee (ad hoc).
8. Other tasks – voluntary and assigned by Chair.
